My art is a journey through memory, myth, and transformation. Through painting and sculpture, I connect viewers to landscapes both real and imagined—blending ancient influences with personal narratives, ecological urgency, and deeply felt responses to place.
After relocating to New Orleans’ French Quarter in 1998, my practice took a decisive turn. Trained in stone carving and bronze casting, I found myself without access to the large studio spaces those materials required. In response, I began experimenting with salvaged Mardi Gras plastics found in the streets, eventually inventing a sculptural method using hot glue as both adhesive and structural core. These techniques are entirely my own—developed through necessity and refined over decades into a language of expressive, biomorphic forms.
In sculpture, I embrace dreams and myth while using recycled materials to create works rooted in petroglyphs, geoglyphs, and metempsychosis. I transform discarded materials into expressive assemblages, sculptural lamps, and toy-like biomorphic designs that blur the line between art and function. Recycling fuels my creativity and enhances my environment, inspiring sustainable, purposeful creations. One pivotal moment came in Costa Rica, when I saw a plastic bag floating out to sea. In response, I created an ironic “wastebasket” sculpture intended to return the trash to its source. This idea eventually evolved into a community regatta of boats made from salvaged materials—a symbolic and creative act of reclamation.
In contrast, my paintings offer a quieter, more introspective response to the world around me. Crafted with alla prima, palette knife, and glazing techniques, I explore color and surface texture inspired by plein air studies, dream fragments, and emotional landscapes. These works are not direct depictions, but impressions—records of feeling and light in places that are often threatened, altered, or already vanishing. Painting becomes a way to bear witness, to hold onto a moment before it fades.
Whether working in plastic or oil, my intention remains the same: to preserve and provoke. I aim to hold on to the fleeting—moments, materials, meanings—and share them through forms that challenge convention while embracing vulnerability.
I firmly believe that art’s worth is subjective, boldly questioning the conventional norms of commercial success versus artistic integrity.
